NOTICE: From time to time, supplies of Certified Organic Seed run out. When this occurs, we use the organic seeds (in a mixture) that we still have and then use Untreated non-GMO seed for the remainder of the mixture. We will then issue a non-GMO letter upon request.

LiHerald has been a top performer in our plots for years. Winter hardiness, high digestibility, and persistence make this a favorite on our farms. Meadow Fescue (MF) has become the new darling for pairing with alfalfa for two reasons. First, work at the University of Wisconsin and at Cornell University has shown it to have slightly higher NDFD than Tall Fescue (TF) and equivalent to Ryegrass. Second, there is some work at Cornell and the WH Miner Institute showing that even if MF never equals TF when competing head to head, MF will equal or exceed TF when planted with alfalfa.

LiHerold Meadow Fescue
  • A top performer in trials from Wisconsin to Kentucky
  • A standout in our Rockville plots for the past 3 years
  • Fast establishing

Zones: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

KF Galaxy
  • Very winter hardy
  • Exceptional quality-high NDFd
  • Excellent for pasture or hay
  • A top performer throughout the Midwest

Zones: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

We have some plots to find this out for ourselves. There is some thinking by our staff to combine meadow fescue with tall fescue to retain the drought tolerance of the tall fescue. Alfa Plus on page 13 would be one such mix.

We encourage you to take a close look at top-performing LiHerold and KingFisher Galaxy, which are:

  • Faster establishing than Tall Fescue or orchardgrass
  • Easy to dry for dry hay
  • Best pasture grass for central to upper Midwest
